Upgraded facilities add options for quick, convenient, and comfortable student dining

Since its founding in 1926, Rutgers University-Camden has continually provided renowned educational opportunities in the New York City metropolitan area. The institution has grown to offer its students about 40 undergraduate majors, 30 graduate programs, and the resources of one of the nation’s top higher education institutions. In 2019, Rutgers chose to upgrade the dining hall serving this critical campus to provide a variety of options that meet the needs of today’s students.

Gannett Fleming, in a design-build partnership with Gilbane Building Company, assumed the role of lead designer to deliver dining hall improvements. Our firm provided architectural design, as well as mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering, to renovate the existing facility. Floor plan modifications accommodated new food services and equipment; upgrades included lighting, paint, flooring, and wall finishes. The team successfully delivered the design-build project within a tight timeframe, ensuring that the facility was open in time for the new school year.

What We Did

Our firm began by conducting a site visit to verify the existing conditions and layout and then prepared demolition plans to enable the renovation. Upgrades were designed to meet the university’s need for improved student and visitor flow through the space. To accomplish this, the modified floor plan created separate areas for different dining options, from a convenient checkout for takeout items to a service area for prepared meals and a more traditional sit-down environment.

The relocation of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) air devices, variable air volume (VAV) boxes, and controlling thermostats, as well as the plumbing relocation of drains, vents, and water service lines within a demising wall, enabled better flow and created open, inviting spaces throughout the facility.
