PennTec 2023 Annual Technical Conference
CREATING BETTER WASTEWATER SOLUTIONS, TOGETHER.
From Pennsylvania’s cities and suburbs to its boroughs and townships, we thrive on designing and building resilient, sustainable infrastructure to ensure a healthy water environment and a bright future for the Keystone State. Our team of water and wastewater experts lead the way in solutions that help ready your community for tomorrow’s challenges today.
At PennTec 2023, Gannett Fleming is bringing fresh perspectives and new ideas for wastewater challenges. Our presenters will discuss how ultraviolet (UV) disinfection can solve your unique wastewater treatment needs, along with a new incinerator process that can result in cost savings and reduced supplemental fuel needs. Our forward-thinking team members are eager to share their experiences with you as we work toward more reliable and resilient wastewater infrastructure, together.
Read on to learn more about the two technical sessions our team will deliver at PennTec.

Shining a Light on UV Disinfection Facility Design

The use of UV disinfection for wastewater treatment has increased dramatically in Pennsylvania in the last few years due to benefits not typically realized with conventional chlorine disinfection. Gannett Fleming recently designed a 60 million gallons per-day (MGD) UV system for an existing wastewater treatment plant. Design and equipment selection considerations accounted for landfill leachate in the collection system, which can significantly impact UV disinfection technology. This presentation will discuss the project’s equipment selection process, design, and construction, as well as lessons learned for future projects.

The Greater Hazleton Joint Sewer Authority’s (GHJSA) 15 dry ton/day fluidized bed sewage sludge incinerator (SSI) became operational in June 2020. GHJSA typically receives over 50 million gallons of hauled waste annually, so accepting fats, oils, and grease (FOG) was a logical addition to its hauled waste program and was designed to augment the SSI’s operations. However, GHJSA takes a different approach from facilities that directly inject FOG into incinerators. This presentation will provide an overview of the new incinerator process and detail how FOG in the solids feed resulted in cost savings and reduced supplemental fuel needs.
