Featured Projects:
Environmental and Engineering Study, Phase II
Client: Pennsylvania Department of General Services
Location: Lancaster, Pennsylvania
Community Hospital of Lancaster Gannett Fleming provided an architectural/engineering condition and energy assessment of the Community Hospital of Lancaster. The hospital consisted of seven interconnected wings constructed in stages that dated from 1929 to 1993, with an approximate gross area of 212,000 square feet. The building heights ranged from three to five levels.
Existing condition of the building was documented regarding the interior building treatments, exterior façade, heating, ventilating, and air conditioning equipment and distribution, electrical power, lighting, and telecommunication systems. Based on the building condition findings, an adaptive reuse functional assessment was performed based on the conversion of the facility to student housing and other educational programs (classrooms, offices, library, auditorium, etc.). Cost estimates and ongoing operating costs associated with the adaptive reuse were developed.
A Phase II environmental site assessment was also performed. Samplings were taken, tested, and documented in a final report. Specifically, the study focused on identifying asbestos-containing materials, lead-containing paint, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), and radon.
Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvements – Cogeneration Facility Using Microturbines
Client: Great Neck Water Pollution Control District
Location: Great Neck, New York
Great Neck Water Pollution Control District digesters Typical digester gas pre-conditioning skid Typical microturbines (manufactured by Capstone) Gannett Fleming provided comprehensive engineering services to increase plant energy efficiency for the expansion of a 5.3 mgd wastewater treatment plant. Microturbines were selected as the most suitable cogeneration technology for the plant capacity utilizing digester gas. Power from the cogeneration facility would be used on-site to reduce plant electricity demand and part of the waste heat utilized by heat exchanges to heat the digester and building working space.
Cogeneration Facility Features:
- A concrete pad and canopy for the facility
- Two 65 kW microturbines with future expansion of four microturbines
- A gas pre-treatment skid feeding digester gas to the microturbines
- Waste heat recovery system for digester heating and building space heating
- Electric grid tie-in for on-site plant electricity use
Services:
- Feasibility study, final design, and construction management
- Digester gas production projection
- Assistance with digester gas components sampling and analysis
- Plant electric usage and heating requirement analysis
- Coordination with plant upgrade and operation, assistance with performance testing, start up, and operation and maintenance manuals
Energy Efficiency Reference for Environmental Reviewers
Client: U.S. EPA, Office of Federal Activities
Location: Nationwide
Gannett Fleming was responsible for developing an energy efficiency reference handbook for U.S. EPA reviewers who assess major federal actions under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Section 309 of the Clean Air Act. The handbook provides technical information on energy efficiency
topics, including:
- Facility Siting
- Construction
- Buildings (Maintenance and Operations)
- Federally Assisted Housing
- Military Installations
- Laboratories
- Industrial Facilities
- Transportation Facilities
- Federal Vehicle Fleets
A discussion of policies and initiatives promoting energy efficiency at the largest energy-consuming federal agencies is presented within the document. The handbook also summarizes recent technological advances in energy efficiency and provides a synopsis of energy efficiency-related legislation. The handbook also includes hyperlinks and references for further information on each topic.
Architectural and Engineering Services
Client: Green Energy Sustainable Agreements
Location: Nationwide
Gannett Fleming is providing architectural and engineering services on multiple energy retrofit task orders under a master service agreement with Green Energy Sustainable Agreements. It is setting up contracts with small grocery chains to retrofit their stores to reduce energy costs and provide the store owner with long-term savings through the program. The intent of the program is to reduce energy utility costs and maximize energy efficiency through the 15-year life of the agreement.
