Lost River Dam
Lost River Watershed, Hardy County, West Virginia
Client: U.S. Department of Agriculture
This earth and rockfill embankment flood control and water supply dam is 74-feet-high and 900-feet-long. Highly variable conditions were encountered in the valley bottom and abutment areas during subsurface explorations. Foundation and drainage details were tailored to match expected conditions during construction. Our firm completed design in 1994 and construction was completed in 1998. The dam will impound approximately 498-acre-feet at the 100-year pool level.
Special Features:
- Principal spillway - reinforced concrete riser structure, three-foot-diameter prestressed concrete conduit, and reinforced concrete impact basin.
- Emergency spillway - 160 feet wide and 1,300 feet long, excavated in earth and rock at the right abutment of the dam.
