Native Planting Area — Ginny's Garden

Ginny's gardenGannett Fleming's East Lawn area of the corporate headquarters in Harrisburg, Pa., has been transformed into a native planting area. This native planting area, affectionately referred to as "Ginny's Garden," is a sustainable, natural garden named in memory of long-time employee, Virginia "Ginny" Gritman.

As part of our commitment to sustainability, Ginny's Garden saves energy and reduces pollution by lowering the use of gasoline-powered mowers, supports the ecosystem, and improves water quality.

Why Native Plantings?

Prior to Ginny's Garden, the Gannett Fleming campus had more than one acre of turf grass surrounding the East Building. With rising maintenance costs and limited sustainable benefits of turf grass, this area was simply wasted space.

By integrating native landscaping techniques, our campus has become cleaner, more attractive, and healthier, while depleting fewer resources. Converting the lawn into a native garden area has lowered maintenance costs, enriched the beauty of the campus, and dramatically reduced the use of fertilizers and chemicals.

In addition, native plants rarely become invasive, thereby reducing the need for further landscape services. Native plants also support the ecosystem by providing food and shelter for birds, butterflies, and other desirable wildlife, and their root systems improve water quality and enrich the soil by helping rainfall percolate into the earth, reducing erosion and runoff.
