This project was a part of NJDOT’s plan to improve the operational and safety conditions of U.S. Route 1. The U.S. Route 1/U.S. Route 130/Route 171 junction, located in North Brunswick Township, N.J., was known as New Jersey’s number one accident “hot spot” serving more than 120,000 vehicles per day.
NJDOT faced several challenges due to right-of-way and access constraints between adjacent interchanges, multiple driveways to shopping centers and office buildings, and residential streets. The solution called for developing a three-level interchange with direct connector ramps and providing shoulders, auxiliary lanes, median closures, and proper geometry to meet current standards. In addition, a frontage road, forming New Jersey’s first single point urban interchange, was added to remove the unsafe weave and merges and improve access to local commercial properties.
The $60 million interchange, completed five months ahead of schedule and $2 million under budget, proved to be a significant benefit to the community and drivers by eliminating the most dangerous intersection in New Jersey.
