Newport News Office Raises Money for Water For People
On May 5, Jessica Hou, P.E., a project manager, and Pam Majumdar, E.I.T., a designer, both in the Newport News, Va., office, hosted a workplace giving fundraising luncheon for Water For People. Water For People helps people in developing countries improve quality of life by supporting the development of locally sustainable drinking water resources, sanitation facilities, and hygiene education programs.
This is the fifth year that the Newport News office has participated in annual workplace giving through the Water For People Peninsula Campaign. The luncheon, donations, and raffle raised more than $400, which was donated to Water For People’s ongoing projects in Africa, Asia, and South America.
During the luncheon, Pam gave a presentation about her recent trip to Kolkata, India with Water For People as a member of their World Water Corps. She traveled with five other volunteers and helped conduct more than 300 surveys on Water For People’s installed latrines and water points, their use and functionality, and anitary education throughout the 24 South Parganas district of West Bengal. These surveys will help the Water For People organization evaluate what further work and education is needed in the district and at these water points. Pam shared her personal experience with the group and encouraged understanding of the issues faced in developing countries.
