Madison Office of GeoDecisions Packs Meals for Haiti
The Madison, Wis., office of GeoDecisions staff and their families volunteered as part of a three-day Madison Meals for Haiti event. This event resulted in packing a total of 522,588 high-protein meals, which included rice, powdered soy, vitamins, and dehydrated vegetables. This exceeded the group's goal of half a million meals destined for orphanages in Haiti, as well as other Haitians in need. The meals were packaged April 8 through April 10 and were in transit to Haiti on April 11.
The food, purchased in bulk from a group called Feeding Children International of Stewart, Minn., cost approximately $62,700. To date, the event raised approximately $62,900. The shrink-wrapped meals were loaded into truck containers just as the packing efforts ended and were driven to Chicago, Ill., to be taken via train to Miami, Fla., and then shipped to Haiti by way of Jamaica. Of the total collected, approximately 12,000 meals will also be distributed to Madison’s local food pantries.
