Engineering Mentorship
Gannett Fleming commends Jonathan Knight, an electrical engineer based in the Baltimore, Md., office, for recently volunteering his time to mentoring a high school senior. Marcel, a student at North Point High School for Science, Technology, and Industry, greatly appreciated Jonathan's assistance with his senior design project.
Marcel's senior engineering class worked through the stages of engineering a patentable invention. Jonathan and Marcel worked together to evaluate existing technology, submit a design proposal, design specifications, test specifications, and present the final project. Jonathan helped to provide Marcel with "real world" engineering guidance during each stage of the project. Marcel's final invention is a modification for guitar multi-effects pedals. Traditional pedals are inherently difficult to press at the same time, which often results in mistakes during live guitar performances. Jonathan and Marcel's invention provides a third "dual" pedal which exponentially reduces playing mistakes.
Marcel added this invention to his list of already stellar high school achievements, including a 4.1 grade point average and varsity letters in three sports. This intelligent senior received a full scholarship to the University of Maryland at College Park where he will be studying Mechanical Engineering this fall.
