Spotsylvania County’s Hunting Run Dam Receives CMAA Award

July 3, 2003

Hunting Run DamSpotsylvania County and Gannett Fleming were presented with a 2003 Construction Management Association of America (CMAA), Mid-Atlantic chapter, project of the year award for Hunting Run Dam and related facilities. The project received the award in the Dams & Waterways category for public projects with a construction value less than $50 million.

The design and construction of Hunting Run Dam and its related facilities included a roller-compacted concrete (RCC) / earthfill dam, relocation of approximately 3,300 feet of a state road, construction of the Rapidan River raw water pump station and river intake, and installation of nearly 2,500 feet of 36-inch ductile iron pipe that connects the reservoir with the pump station.

Hunting Run Dam is nearly 2,450 feet long with a single bend approximately at its mid-point. This composite structure is comprised of both zoned earthfill embankments and a concrete gravity dam. The gravity dam, so named for its ability to maintain stability based on its sheer mass of concrete, is 90-feet high and approximately 1,350 feet long.
