Central Florida Bridge Project Receives Prestigious Award

Jan. 25, 2012

Interstate 4 over Reedy Creek(Osceola County, Fla.) The twin bridges on Interstate 4 (I-4) that span Reedy Creek in Osceola County, Fla., were recognized with a Grand Award in the structural systems category by the Florida Institute of Consulting Engineers (FICE) as part of its 2012 Engineering Excellence Awards Competition. The FICE competition recognizes engineering firms for projects that demonstrate a high degree of achievement, value, and ingenuity.

Gannett Fleming provided design-build services to assist the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) District 5 with the final design and installation of a supplemental substructure system on the I-4 bridges spanning Reedy Creek. FDOT identified the twin, six-span bridges as scour critical after bridge inspections revealed that they were unstable structures.

Gannett Fleming provided a cost-effective design solution for the bridges that meets Federal Highway Administration criteria for a low-risk scour category and does not require future monitoring. The firm’s alternative design delivered a savings of approximately $1.6 million to FDOT and provided an innovative solution that has restored the structures’ integrity and improved public safety for the 23,000 vehicles that travel these bridges daily.
