(Harrisburg, Pa.) Gannett Fleming, an international planning, design, and construction management firm, was recently recognized in the American Council of Engineering Companies of Pennsylvania (ACEC/PA) 2010 Diamond Awards for Engineering Excellence program for its role in Exelon’s Renewable Energy Education Center.

Gannett Fleming served as the prime consultant for Exelon's new 3,950-square-foot Renewable Energy Education Center, one of only a few such facilities in the U.S., which received an Honor Award in the Energy category. The center is a new feature inside the 110,000-square-foot Fairless Hills Generating Station in Fairless Hills, Pa., the second largest landfill gas-fueled power plant in the U.S. The new facility, which utilizes a hands-on exhibition area to educate children in a fun, memorable way about renewable energy, conservation, and sustainable practices, is integrated with the Pennsylvania Department of Education's proven curriculum.

The project scope grew dramatically within its aggressive five-month design-build schedule, and the project team faced multiple challenges, including an outdated industrial office space and unsalvageable interior finishes. Powered by 100 percent renewable energy, this Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Silver Certified facility features numerous energy-saving strategies and eco-friendly design solutions.

The new center boasts such features as building renovation and reuse to protect open lands; use of renewable energy from the adjacent plant; water-conserving landscaping and plumbing fixtures; and energy-conserving building systems. Other features include the use of recycled building materials; recycling of demolition waste; daylight in lieu of electric lighting; use of reflective roofing for heat island effect reduction; and use of local materials during construction.
