Gannett Fleming Project Recognized by ACEC/NJ

March 22, 2010

Route U.S. 1 & 9: Rahway River Bridge and Sections 1K & 3M Project(Mt. Laurel, N.J.) The American Council of Engineering Companies of New Jersey (ACEC/NJ) selected Gannett Fleming’s Route U.S. 1 & 9: Rahway River Bridge and Sections 1K & 3M Project as an Honor Award winner in its 2010 Engineering Excellence Awards Program. The ACEC/NJ Engineering Excellence Awards Program recognizes engineering firms for projects that demonstrate a high degree of innovation, achievement, and value.

Route U.S. 1 & 9 is a vital portion of the central New Jersey infrastructure. A major principal arterial highway for the New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pa., and New York City region, the road was becoming obsolete and in need of repair. Gannett Fleming was retained to improve Sections 1K & 3M and to construct two bridges spanning the Rahway River.

A significant component of this award-winning project was to design two new bridges that would retain the historic signatures and charm of the old bridge that spanned the Rahway River. The project team ensured that the important architectural features of the deck on the historic bridge were incorporated into the new designs. The completed structures are bridges that improve traffic flow for motorists while remaining true to the historical elements of the architecture.

Using innovative methodologies and techniques, Gannett Fleming improved the roadway and safety conditions of Route U.S. 1 & 9, increased its capacity, and enhanced the overall infrastructure of central New Jersey.
