ACEC/MD Engineering Excellence Awards Program Recognizes Gannett Fleming Project
March 24, 2010
(Baltimore, Md.) Gannett Fleming, an international planning, design, and construction management firm, was recently recognized in the American Council of Engineering Companies of Maryland (ACEC/MD) 2010 Engineering Excellence Awards program. The emergency and long-term repair work to the Southwest Diversion Pressure Sewer (SWD) in Baltimore, Md., won an Honor Award in the Environmental category.
As a result of failures in the 102-inch diameter section of the City of Baltimore’s SWD, Gannett Fleming designed long-term repairs at two different sites along the sewer line. Gannett Fleming was tasked with fast-track development of biddable documents, as it became apparent that substantial lengths of the SWD needed to be repaired or replaced.
Gannett Fleming developed several innovative repair strategies, including emergency design and construction oversight of the world’s largest temporary steel patch. An innovative, reinforced concrete patch system was also utilized. These patches were installed quickly and economically, and were able to provide leak-proof performance, as the sewer line had to maintain flows while repairs were installed.
