Gannett Fleming Project Ranked #2 in “Top 10 Roads of 2008”
December 26, 2008
(Harrisburg, Pa.) The reconstruction of Pennsylvania State Route 309 Expressway, Sections 100, 103, and 110, has been named #2 for the “Top 10 Roads 2008” by Roads and Bridges magazine. This award recognizes the best in road construction for 2008.
Gannett Fleming’s Valley Forge, Pa., office performed the preliminary engineering and environmental studies to rehabilitate 10 miles of limited-access expressway for the reconstruction of Route 309 in Montgomery County, Pa. The project included the rehabilitation of eight interchanges, redesign of two interchanges, replacement of eight overhead bridges, widening and rehabilitation of 16 bridges, and the design of 30,000 feet of retaining walls.
Today, motorists travel on a widened Route 309 – with longer on- and off-ramps and expanded medians and shoulders – between Church Road and the Fort Washington/Turnpike Interchange and from the Interchange north through Highland Avenue. Other improvements include, sound walls at several locations, a 50-inch-high concrete median barrier/glare screen that spans the length of the expressway, and an improved stormwater management system to manage the flood-prone areas. With the Fort Washington Interchange completed, two thirds of the Route 309 Expressway has been reconstructed.
This project is part of a $300 million investment from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to create a beautiful, modern expressway that will benefit travelers and residents for years to come.
