(Harrisburg, Pa.) Gannett Fleming’s Youghiogheny Reservoir Alternate Steel Bridge won the Association for Bridge Construction and Design (ABCD), Susquehanna Chapter Award in the Outstanding New Multi-Span Bridge category. The ABCD award recognizes the Youghiogheny Bridge for its technical merit, aesthetics, innovation, and construction technique.
Located in Fayette and Somerset counties, Pa., the Youghiogheny Reservoir Alternate Steel Bridge features spans exceeding 230 feet and some of the largest drilled shafts ever constructed in Pennsylvania. In a process similar to design-build, this alternate design was prepared by Gannett Fleming’s Harrisburg Bridge Unit, in collaboration with G.A. & F.C. Wagman, the general contractor, and High Steel Structures, Inc., the fabricator.
The Gannett Fleming, Wagman, and High Steel team competitively bid for the project against an “as-designed” 12-span, prestressed concrete bridge. The team’s alternate design of an eight-span steel structure, with steel girders allowing for longer spans, translated into significant savings.
The Youghiogheny Reservoir Alternate Steel Bridge was previously selected for inclusion in Roads & Bridges magazine 2005 Top 10 Bridges list. This list recognizes national bridges for their unique solutions developed to overcome various challenges.
