Top 10 Bridges List Honors Gannett Fleming Project

November 1, 2006

Monroe Street Viaduct(Baltimore, Md.) Roads & Bridges magazine selected Gannett Fleming’s Monroe Street Viaduct for inclusion in its 2006 Top 10 Bridges list. The magazine featured the international planning, design, and construction management firm’s bridge as No. 7 in its November issue.

Gannett Fleming provided condition evaluation, design, and full-time construction inspection services for the Monroe Street Viaduct replacement project, located in Baltimore, Md. The project included an 850-foot-long viaduct, 380 feet of retained approach roadway, and two, 180-foot-long curved ramp bridges tying into the viaduct.

The bridge is under the mainline and ramps of I-95 with piers on both sides of Monroe Street. This location restricted shifting the existing roadway in either a vertical or a horizontal direction. The new nine-span viaduct replaced a 1950s era, 32-span, concrete structure over CSXT’s mainline tracks, MARC’s commuter rail track, the Gwynns Falls floodplain, and a local roadway.

Each year, Roads & Bridges magazine recognizes bridges for their uniqueness and ability to overcome various challenges. This marks the third consecutive year Gannett Fleming’s Bridge Practice has earned this Top 10 honor.
