Gannett Fleming Wins DBIA Award

January 4, 2006

(Akron, Ohio) The Plymouth Ridge Road Bridge Replacement Project was recently honored by the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA), Ohio Valley Chapter, with the Design-Build Best Project Award in the Transportation under $15 Million category. Designed by Gannett Fleming’s Akron office, the bridge replacement was recognized for its innovative design.

Located in Ashtabula, Ohio, the Plymouth Ridge Road Bridge Replacement Project involved several difficult design considerations, including right-of-way limitations, utility conflicts, and drainage constraints. Considering these project challenges, the design-build team, consisting of Gannett Fleming and Union Industrial Contractors, worked together during the conceptual stages to identify a winning approach that balanced constructability and the risk, feasibility, and cost of construction.

Completed ahead of schedule, this project involved replacing a truss bridge on stone abutments with a single-span, rolled-beam structure. The replacement bridge project utilized a design-build delivery process that involved approach work, road replacement, drainage, and railroad coordination with the Norfolk Southern Railway Company. Due to right-of-way constraints, turned-back mechanically stabilized earth walls were used to support the bridge superstructure.

Sustainability and aesthetics were important to the project’s design-build team. The team accomplished a sustainable approach by utilizing stone blocks from the old bridge abutments to build a retaining wall. The wall, which was required in a cut section adjacent to a cemetery within the project limits, offered a natural, aesthetically pleasing look that enhanced the overall site.
