(New York, N.Y.) The Arch Street Yard in Queens, N.Y., was recently named the
2006 Design-Build Project of the Year by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Metropolitan Section. This award recognizes excellence and innovation in New York City design-build projects.
Gannett Fleming Transit & Rail Systems (GFT&RS), a division of Gannett Fleming specializing in transit and railroad track, signal, communication, and electric traction design, was responsible for preliminary engineering, as well as the functional and operational requirements of the facility. The firm also provided project management services to the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) as part of this $76 million project. The new maintenance facility was designed to service a fleet of 800 new M-7 vehicles in support of future operations at Grand Central Terminal.
GFT&RS provided the LIRR with engineering and architectural design services, including civil, utilities, track, structural, mechanical, electrical, industrial, and signals work. As part of the design-build contract, GFT&RS prepared the request for proposal (RFP), as well as the project drawings, performance specifications, design criteria, and program requirements.
