Philadelphia Region Project Wins National Award

December 19, 2005

U.S. Route 202, Section 404 Improvement Project(Valley Forge, Pa.) The U.S. Route 202, Section 404 Improvement Project has won the National Partnership for Highway Quality (NPHQ) 2005 State Award. Gannett Fleming, an international planning, design, and construction management firm, served as one of two designers for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) project.

Part of an overall $358 million project, the U.S. Route 202 Improvement Project widened five miles of Route 202 and improved the interchanges where Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) and Routes 202 and 422 meet in King of Prussia, Pa. Gannett Fleming’s Valley Forge and Philadelphia, Pa., offices designed a major section of the project, including the truss bridge over the Schuylkill Expressway.

The Route 202 project, which began in 1999 and was completed in 2003, was recognized by NPHQ for improving one of the Philadelphia region’s key interchanges that struggled to handle 180,000 vehicles a day. The congestion threatened the region’s economic health and created daily headaches for commuters.

“We are delighted to be recognized with this prestigious award as part of PennDOT’s Route 202 team,” stated Chester Allen, P.E., senior vice president and transportation director with Gannett Fleming. “This project supports economic development, improves safety in the community, and benefits commuters who travel in the area every day.”

NPHQ is a partnership among federal, state, and roadway leaders and officials. NPHQ’s goal is to employ ingenuity and innovation in producing better, safer, and more user-friendly roads and bridges that are completed faster, last longer, and minimize congestion and inconvenience.
