Gannett
Fleming Project Development Corp. provided design/build services
for the new helicopter helipad that
was recently constructed at Harrisburg Hospital,
which is part of the PinnacleHealth System. Gannett Fleming provided
engineering, architectural, and construction management services,
as well as commissioning services to establish operating procedures
and provide training for hospital staff.
A location and feasibility study identified the roof of the north
building as the best location on the hospital campus for the helipad.
One elevator had to be extended to the roof area. This involved building
a penthouse on top of the existing penthouse that housed the elevator
machine room and modifying the existing penthouse for the elevator
entrance. Construction of the helipad required proper scheduling
to interface with hospital operations.
The helipad includes several unique safety design features, such
as a gutter system, safety netting, an oil/water separator system,
a special foam fire suppression system, and a complex snow/melt system.
 Operating
performance and safety were key issues in the design and construction
of the helipad.
