Bear Creek Dam Receives CMAA Award

July 3, 2003

Bear Creek DamGannett Fleming and the Bear Creek Historical Society were presented with a 2003 Construction Management Association of America (CMAA), Mid-Atlantic chapter, project of the year award for Bear Creek Dam.

The project received the award in the dams and waterways category for private projects with a construction value less than $10 million. The Bear Creek Historical Society and Gannett Fleming were recognized for this achievement at an awards banquet on May 15, 2003 at the Valley Brook Country Club in Blackwood, N.J.

Bear Creek DamLocated in Bear Creek, Pa., Bear Creek Dam and the lake it creates are an important source of recreation and tourism for the Village of Bear Creek. Built in the late 1800s, Bear Creek Dam required replacement after a portion of it collapsed. The original dam was demolished and replaced with a new roller-compacted concrete (RCC) dam with a rough-sawn timber facing. This innovative design maintained the historical aspects of the old structure, and used state-of-the-art technology to create a safer, more efficient dam that is more durable than the original structure.

The new Bear Creek Dam is the first RCC dam in the world to be constructed with a timber face. Gannett Fleming’s design provided a significant cost savings to the community, as compared to previous alternatives that were considered.
