The construction of a new interchange on U.S. 29 at MD 216 in Howard County, Maryland, received an award of excellence in the consultant, highway design (large project) category, in the 2003 Maryland Quality Initiative Awards competition.

Gannett Fleming, the prime consultant of this joint venture, provided the final design services for two miles of median widening on U.S. 29, the one-mile dualization of MD 216, and a new partial cloverleaf interchange. Some of this project’s unique features include:

  • Design of two roundabouts and their connections/termini to mainline MD 216 and the ramps leading from/to U.S. 29
  • Unique channelization
  • Combined use stormwater management ponds
  • Use of a special utility easement
