U.S. 29/MD 216 Interchange Before Construction |
The construction
of a new
interchange on U.S. 29 at MD 216 in Howard County, Maryland,
received an award of excellence in the consultant, highway design
(large project) category, in the 2003 Maryland
Quality Initiative Awards competition.
Gannett Fleming, the prime consultant of this joint venture, provided
the final design services for two miles of median widening on U.S.
29, the one-mile dualization of MD 216, and a new partial cloverleaf
interchange. Some of this project’s unique features include:
- Design of two roundabouts and their connections/termini to mainline
MD 216 and the ramps leading from/to U.S. 29
- Unique channelization
- Combined use stormwater management ponds
- Use of a special utility easement

The award was presented by the State Highway Administration, Federal
Highway Administration, Maryland Highway Contractors Association,
Maryland Asphalt Association, American Concrete Pavement Association,
Maryland Transportation Authority, The Consulting Engineers’ Council,
Maryland Aggregates Association, County Engineers Association of
Maryland, and Maryland Ready Mix Concrete Association.
